Understanding the Sizing Formula

Step 1: Determine Total Appliance Wattage

Every electrical appliance has a specifications sticker displaying its input wattage consumption (in Watts). If only Amperes and Voltage are listed, multiply them to get Watts: **Watts = Amps × Volts**.

Step 2: Convert Watts to VA (Volt-Amperes)

Stabilizers are rated in KVA (Kilo-Volt-Amperes). To convert Watts to VA, divide the total wattage by the power factor (typically 0.8 for induction motors found in ACs and fridges): **VA = Watts / 0.8**.

Step 3: Add a Safety Margin (20-25%)

During startup, inductive loads (compressors, motors) draw a brief surge current that is 2 to 3 times their running current. To prevent the stabilizer from tripping due to overloading, we add a 25% buffer: **Required VA = VA × 1.25**.
